Accelerate your postgraduate career in the fusion industry
Our students will collaborate closely with fusion industrial partners to earn a Doctor of Engineering (EngD) qualification, renowned for its industry focus and impact. Our training programme supports CDT graduates to achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) status within a few years and develop close networks within the UK fusion supply chain.

Our 3-month training programme provides theoretical, practical, and computational training, spanning the entire fusion engineering lifecycle.
To ensure accessibility for graduates from across the STEM disciplines, all students will begin the programme with foundational fusion engineering training, delivered in a hybrid format through academic and industry workshops.
Our programme supports the development of a skills portfolio for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status and professional networks in the UK fusion supply chain. At the very start of your 4-year program, our 12-week core training supports STEM graduates from all disciplines to understand fusion engineering.
Workshops with academic and industry experts will focus on 4 key themes:
Powering Fusion - The physics of fusion, power concepts and fusion engineering grand challenges.
Research Methods - Developing experimental techniques and qualification, digital engineering and use of robotics & AI (Artificial Intelligence).
Fusion Engineering - Focusing on plasmas, materials engineering and power generation.
Engineering in Society - Building awareness of the importance of trusted research, ethics and personal development of your CEng portolio.

Core training
Core training will follow a hybrid format of workshops, so that our students are able to undertake the majority of training in their home university:
Monday - study at home campus, with synchronous live workshops online
Tuesday - study at home campus, with synchronous live workshops online
Wednesday - AM: travel to in-person workshop, PM: in-person workshop, hotel overnight with the cohort
Thursday - AM: in-person workshop, PM: travel home
Friday - study at home campus, with synchronous live workshops online
Bespoke On-going Training
After the core training, students will identify and attend besoke training to support their specific projectfor the remainder of their first year in the programme. This secondary training will be relatively light touch, hence students will be able to work on their doctoral project. The Centre will continue to offer ongoing training through cohort workshops, seminars, summer schools and conferences. All students will recieve a healthy project budget that they will manage locally.
Also key to the docotral programme is an industrial placement for the student, at a location where they can develop further work that is relevant to their thesis.
